Karl Haas, the Radio Hall of Fame's only 'classical music' inductee and host of one of the nation's longest running daily radio programs, 'Adventures in Good Music', expertly blends commenentary and his own performances, bringing to light the music and lives of the world's best composers and their musical heritage.
Adventures In Good Music was a GREAT show: it taught listeners how to approach listening to some of the world's best Classical music. It's a crying shame that so far this appears to be the only installment available on CD, for Haas was not just a good pianist, but also had a rare gift for drawing ordinary people into the worlds of the extraordinary composers whose works he featured. While he also has a book on how to listen to Classical music available, I find that offering pedantic in marked comparison to this CD, which makes the "high art" of Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Debussy (whose Claire De Lune Hass also treats as "Romantic" -- fully explaining exactly why) accessible to the Everyman and Everywoman on the street. No need to be able to read music, and no lecture on orchestral timbre, just a quiet afternoon chat between you and a professional musician about what it is about some of his favorite works which inspires him, in language which is almost certainly created many a new fan for this music played "on wooden instruments that play songs from a thousand years ago," as a character on a favorite TV show of mine once put it. Perfect as a gift or for yourself, this is a rare find: I advise you to scoop it up while you still can.
